Full And Independent Investigation Needed Over Babies Deaths At MRH
A full and independent investigation should be conducted into the death of babies at the Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, Fianna Fáil have said.
The party's spokesperson on health Billy Kelleher said that he was shocked at the lack of engagement with mothers.
"The immediate priority today should be the need for assurances on maternity staffing levels at Portlaoise," Deputy Kelleher said.
Adding: "Expectant mothers need to have confidence that the hospital is a safe environment for them and their babies. I want to extend my deepest sympathies to the families involved.
"I welcome the unequivocal apology given by the HSE to the families and I believe there should be an independent investigation into all these incidents under the auspicious of HIQA set up as a matter of urgency.
"I would also urge Minister Reilly to seek international expertise in the inquiry. We need to see trust and confidence restored in the maternity services."

Father Arrested Following The Deaths Of Two Brothers In Co Mayo
Sanjeev Chada, 42, the father of two brothers Eoghan and Ruairí Chada, has been arrested after being discharged from hospital. He was arrested earlier today in Castlebar and is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984, at Westport Garda Station.

A group of 100 serving and retired members of An Garda Síochána are to take part in a 'Four Peak Mountain Challenge' this month. The aim of the challenge is to promote mental health awareness within the organisation and in the wider community, while also hoping to raise much needed funds for the Charity Aware.

Investigation Launched Into Apartment Complex Fire
A gardai investigation has been launched into the cause of a fire at an apartment complex in Clondalkin, west Dublin. Residents reported a fire at the Thornfield Square Apartments on Watery Lane at around 5am on Tuesday morning. The fire brigade and ambulance service attended the scene, with a number of residents evacuated from the building.
