Maloney Calls For Uni Heads To 'Get Their Own Houses In Order'

Labour TD, Eamon Maloney, has said that university heads should 'get their own houses in order' before speculating about third-level college fees in 2016.

Mr Maloney said: "For more than two years Minister Quinn has sought to ensure that universities comply with government guidelines on pay and allowances for senior staff often in the face of hostility. In 2013, Minister Quinn confirmed that 10 people in the education sector were earning more than €200,000 and he asked all individuals earning over €200,000 to make a voluntary waiver of salary.

"At that stage, the Minister noted that only two individuals agreed to make personal arrangements with their employer regarding a deduction of the amount of salary over €200,000, but that there had been no voluntary waivers made for the benefit of the State.

"A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General in 2012 also found that around €8 million had been paid out by a number of universities in unauthorised payments to senior staff between 2005 and 2011.

"The level of the Student Contribution for third level students has been clearly set out until 2015. A range of measures are also in place to support greater levels of participation at third level by students from a disadvantaged background, mature students and students with a disability.

"In fact, in 2011/2012 about 42% of students in full-time higher education were in receipt of a student grant. There are also many competing areas within the education system that require funding. There are well- documented advantages, for example, in targeting funding at early intervention and primary education in terms of tackling educational disadvantage and enhancing the life chances of all our children."
