DAA SIPTU Members Vote For Strike Action

SIPTU members of the Dublin Airport Authority have voted in favour if industrial action in a dispute over their pension scheme.

The long-running dispute surrounds a deficit of around €780m in the Irish Aviation Superannuation Scheme, which covers workers in the DAA and Aer Lingus.

No agreement has yet been reached over how to restructure the pension arrangements to preserve workers' pension entitlements.

94% of DAA SIPTU member voted for industrial action, with 84% in favour of a strike and 81% calling for the cessation of pension contributions.

The results of a similar ballot for Aer Lingus staff are expected later today.

No dates for industrial action have yet been set.

M&S Strike Action Deferred For Emergency Meeting
A one-day strike by staff at Marks & Spencer has been deferred following an intervention by the Labour Court. The strike was due to be held on Friday. It is understood that the strike action has been deferred to allow an emergency hearing to take place at the Labour Court tomorrow.

Nurses At St Patrick's Hospital Vote For Industrial Action
Psychiatric nurses at St Patrick's Hospital in Dublin have voted in favour of industrial action. The dispute is in relation to the unilateral closure of the facility's defined benefit pension scheme. Strike action will begin on Wednesday, 24 May.

Party's Call For Govt Action On Gender Pension Gap
Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin have both called for government action on the gender pension gap. FF have tabled an amendment to the Social Welfare Bill which would see the eligibility criteria for the State pension reviewed to ensure that women who took time out of work to look after children or to care for a loved one, are not penalised.
