€23m Announced For St Patrick's Day Campaign

A total of €23 million is to be spent on Ireland's largest ever St Patrick's Day celebrations.

The government and Tourism Ireland have announced plans for a worldwide campaign to coincide with St Patrick's Day, which will see the ancient Rock of Petra in Jordan turned green along with three ski slopes in Norway, Canada and Austria.

In the forth year of Ireland turning monuments around the world green for the day, Sleeping Beauty's Castle at Disneyland Paris, the Pyramids in Egypt, the Empire State Building and the Sydney Opera House will all take part.

However, controversy was caused last week when the Mayor of New York said he would boycott the city's annual St Patrick's Day Parade following a ban on posters and banners supporting gay rights.

Minister for Tourism Leo Varadker was asked by RTÉ if the Taoiseach should attend the parade, he said that he thought it was up to people to decide themselves whether or not they would attend.
