New Fuel Marker To Tackle Laundering
A new marker is to be added to fuel on both sides of the Border in an effort to curb the lucrative fuel laundering market,
It is understood that the new fuel marker is resistant to current known laundering techniques, which is hoped will help officers in Ireland and Northern Ireland clamp down on the illegal industry.
In the republic launderers mainly target green diesel, using chemicals of acids to strip government markers from the fuel, which they can then resell.
Green diesel and other agricultural fuel qualifies for lower tax, which makes it cheaper. Once the markers have been removed the launderers can then resell the fuel at a substantial profit.
The new marker will be launched in the north and south at the same, and follows tax authorities completing a consultation with the oil industry.
