Prison Service Confirm Mountjoy Hostage Situation

A prisoner in Mountjoy jail was taken hostage by two brothers in an attempt to secure a transfer prison.

The brothers, 24-year-old Stephen and 27-year-old Martin Kelly, tied another prisoner to a chair and held a homemade knife to his throat, according to a report by the Irish Independent.

The brothers demanded a transfer to another facility, the report adds.

However, it is understood that at the time of the incident, around 15:00 on Thursday, a Control and Restraint (C&R) team were training in Mountjoy at the time.

The Irish Independent adds that the Prison Service confirmed that the incident had taken place but was "resolved without incident".
