Garda Patrol Car Rammed On M1 By Transit Van

A garda officer remains in hospital after a Ford Transit van rammed a patrol car while travelling at speed on the M1 at Whiterath near Castlebellingham at about 21:00 on Sunday night.

The UK-registered van was noticed travelling at speed on the motorway by a Dundalk garda traffic unit, which called for assistance. A garda patrol car carrying two officers assisted but it is understood that the van did not stop.

It rammed the car causing it to spin a number of times before hitting the barrier.

The two garda officers were taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital on Drogheda. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The Transit van fled the scene and garda are continuing to search for it.
