European Parliament Endorse Anti-Poverty Programme

A proposed Europen anti-poverty programme, negotiated with the European Commission and the Member States by Dublin Labour MEP Emer Costello, has been "overwhelmingly" endorsed by the European Parliament.

The new seven-year programme will see a total of €20m made available to Irish organisations alongside additional funding coming from the government.

Welcoming the endorsement Costello said: "Whereas the previous European ‘Most Deprived Programme’ (MDP) was essentially a narrow 'food-based' fund that was primarily concerned with distributing surplus CAP stocks (e.g. beef, cheese, rice and butter), Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived (FEAD) is very much a broader and more progressive 'people-centred' anti-poverty initiative."

"Under the new programme, European funding will now be made available to organisations operating in all Member States that seek to meet people's basic material needs, be it for food or everyday items such as hygienic products, nappies and sleeping bags and to support broader social inclusions measures, such as helping people who are homeless move in to permanent accommodation. FEAD is a small but strategically important step towards a more social Europe.
