Labour MEP Calls For Protected EU Status For Hurley's

Hurley's should be given EU-wide protection as a special Irish cultural tool, Labour MEP Phil Prendergast has said.

Usually granted for food products like cheeses and wines, Ms Prendergast has called for the Protected Geographical Indication status to be extended to cultural icons, such as the hurley.

Ms Pendergast says that as Hurling is indigenous to Ireland, it should be considered for the protective status, according to a report by the Irish Examiner.

She claimed that granting of the status would stop others outside Ireland making or marketing Hurley's.
