RIAI Call On Govt To Defer New Building Regulations
The government has been urged to defer new building regulations due to come into force on Saturday.
The new regulations would see restrictions placed on who has the power to approve and sign off on new building work.
The Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland have called for the deferral of the regulations.
It has been claimed that the new regulations would prevent self-builders from building on their own land.
However, Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has said that the regulations contain nothing that would prevent direct labour.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland the minister said that people who engage in direct labour or self-build would be able to continue to do so "as there is no change in the act; in the statutory obligations under the Building Control Act 1990."
The ministers department have said that the regulations are being introduced to ensure properties are safe and compliant with the regulations.
