Strike Off But Issues Remain: Fianna Fáil
Fianna Fáil’s Transport and Tourism spokesperson has said that while it is welcomed that Friday's planned aviation strike has been cancelled, the issues behind the dispute remain unresolved.
On Wednesday the High Court issued an injunction against the planned SIPTU work stoppage at airports in Dublin, Cork and Shannon.
Deputy Dooley said: "While I welcome the fact that the planned action will not now be going ahead, serious disruption remains. Aer Lingus cancelled 29 flights and make changes to more than 40 others on Thursday and Friday.
"Around 10,000 passengers have been affected by this action on one of the busiest weekends of the year for the Irish tourism industry. The disruption has the potential to blight the good reputation that Ireland has built up over many years.
"While every worker has the right to strike to protect their interests, it should only be used a method of last resort, and not a threat issued when negotiations are still ongoing. I acknowledge that serious differences and issues remain and would urge all sides involved to continue with talks in a bid to resolve this dispute and prevent any further threat of action. Management and unions should re-engage with the four person expert panel set up to mediate in this dispute, as I believe it has the best chance of finding a solution to this row."
