Justice Minister Orders Prison Phone Investigation
Justice Minister Alan Shatter has requested the Inspector of Prisons to carry out an investigation after it emerged that thousands of conversations between solicitors and prisoners were recorded.
Minister Shatter said: "I have asked the Inspector of Prisons to carry out an urgent independent investigation into all the circumstances surrounding the recording of telephone conversations between prisoners and their solicitors.
"The Inspector has been asked to carry out his investigation pursuant to section 31 of the Prisons Act, 2007 and to submit his report to me as soon as possible. The Inspector's report will be published."
The terms of reference of the investigation are as follows:
• Identify the circumstances which gave rise to the recording of these telephone conversations and the action taken to address this;
• Any action now required to address the issue including any amendments to existing law, regulations and practices; and
• Consider the data protection implications of the recording of conversations and any action required to ensure compliance with Data Protection legislation and the rights of those in prison.
Minister Shatter has requested the Inspector of Prisons to submit his report on the investigation as soon as possible.

Murdered Prison Officer's Funeral Takes Place Today
The funeral of murdered prison officer David Black is due to take place today. The 52-year-old father of two was shot as he drove to his work at Maghaberry Prison. The shooting occurred on the M1 in County Armagh on Thursday. A private service is to be held at the family home in Cookstown.

Prison Officers Asking For Help With Prison Gangs
The Prison Officers Association says violent and powerful prison gangs are terrorising more compliant or weaker prisoners and prison officers have no clear instructions on how to handle the issue. Union president Stephen Delaney said it was well known that the prison gang problem in the Republic had become a serious issue in recent years.
