Cycling Commuters On The Increase

There has been an 87% increase in the number of people travelling into Dublin city by bicycle since 2006.

New figures from the National Transport Authority (NTA) show that in 2013 14% more people cycled into the city, during the morning rush hour – 9,061 in 2013 compared with 7,943 in 2012.

Bus and Luas users also increased by 8% and rail passengers increased by 4% in 2013.

Each year, a count is taken between the hours of 7am and 10am at 33 locations around the cordon formed by the Royal and Grand Canals.

Third Day Of Waterford City Bar Staff Sit-In
Staff at a Waterford City pub have entered the third day of a sit-in protest, following an announcement on Tuesday that the bar was to close with immediate effect. Staff at the Park Inn were informed by a solicitor on Tuesday morning that the city pub would close. The bar has been for sale since June 2013 while continuing to trade.

Derry Fleadh Bid Reinstated
The Ulster Council of Comhaltas has reversed its decision for Derry to host the All-Ireland Fleadh in 2013. Last Sunday, executive members said they would not support the bid due to the threat of dissident attacks, however, last night this was overturned and a decision on whether the city will host the event will take place this weekend.

Budget 2013 To Be 'Very Tough' But Fair
Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore has warned that tomorrow’s Budget is going to be "very tough", but added that the government is seeking to protect the most vulnerable people. It is understood that some €3.5bn worth of increased taxes and spending cuts are to be announced as part of the Budget tomorrow.
