Eircom Suspends Email Over 'Intrusion'

Eircom has issued an apology to its 350,000 email users after an "intrusion" was detected in its service on Tuesday (29 April).

In a statement, the company said it made the decision to restrict service to its customers.

It added that it had alerted the Data Protection Commissioner over the breach.

Staff worked overnight to implement a number of system modifications and customers are expected to have access to their account by this evening, while all pending email traffic has been stored and will be delivered as soon as possible.

The firm added that there is no evidence to suggest any impact to their other systems or services, including customer data.

Eircom said it strongly recommends that customers change their email account passwords today.

In investigation into the cause of the intrusion is ongoing.

Eircom Launch 4G Mobile Service
The first 4G service in Ireland is now live, but is currently only available in Dublin, Carlow and Athlone. Eircom have launched the service today, saying that it hoped to extend 4G coverage to other major urban centres between now and christmas. The new 4G service will be available through Meteor and eMobile.

Eircom Laptops Stolen Leads To Potential Data Breach
A potential data breach for up to 6,845 eMobile and Meteor customers along with 686 employees to the Data Protection Commissioner has been reported by eircom. The breach is a result of the theft of three laptops, two laptops from eircom's offices at Parkwest, Dublin and a third laptop stolen from the home of an employee.

Victims Helpline Receives More Calls
Calls to the Crime Victims Helpline increased by 35% last year, the latest figures have revealed. The helpline said that nearly 2,000 people contacted the helpline last year. Victims of physical crimes were the most common callers to the service, while the helpline also reported an increase in the number of people contacting them via email.
