Households Granted 30,000 Litres Of Water Per Year
The average household will face a water bill of €240 following the government's announcement of its proposals for charges and water allowance.
A free yearly water allowance of 30,000 will be granted to homeowners, an allocation described as "generous" by Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan.
An additional 38,000 litres per year will be allocated for each child under 18.
However, according to reports the average household uses up to 140,000 litres of water each year.
The water charge is due to be applied from January 2015 and will remain fixed until 2016. Minister Hogan declined to say what would happen after this period was over.
The Minister also announced that the proposed standing charge of €50 has now been dropped and that charges for people with high water usage due to certain medical conditions would be capped.
The final price of water has still to be decided, but is expected to be settled in August.
