Govt Not Interested In Reform - SF
Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has accused the government of not being capable of "introducing a radical reform programme for policing and justice which is citizen centered, transparent and rights based."
Mr Adams was speaking in Cork at the European Election campaign launch of Liadh Ní Riada.
Mr Adams said: "Alan Shatter was not alone in arrogantly dismissing the concerns of the whistleblowers. Nor was he alone in undermining GSOC over the alleged bugging scandal or in deciding to sack the confidential recipient.
"The former Minister for Justice was robustly and on a daily basis defended and supported by the Taoiseach and Tanaiste and every cabinet minister.
"This government is not genuinely committed to a fundamental and deep rooted reform of policing and justice, including the establishment of an independent policing authority.
"They have been pulled kicking and screaming to this position. The people who deserve the greatest credit are the whistleblowers.
"They have demonstrated what a citizen can do against much more powerful forces.
"This European and local government election is the first opportunity for a genuine democratic revolution and the first step in citizens plotting a new course for the future."
