Taoiseach Urged To Act Quickly On New Minister Of Defence
The Taoiseach has been urged to to move quickly to appoint a new Minister for Defence.
Following the resignation of Alan Shatter responsibility for the defence portfolio lies with the Taoiseach's department, but Fianna Fail have raiosed concerns over how long the interim period might last.
Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Defence Seán Ó Fearghaíl said: "We cannot allow a situation where no Cabinet Minister is appointed to the role before the summer recess.
"There’s a possibility of further Ministerial changes after the local and European elections, but we don’t know if this will be before or after the summer recess. I sincerely hope that the Taoiseach does not intend to delegate the Department of Defence to a Minister of State either in the medium or longer term.
"The next Dáil questions to the Minister for Defence are scheduled for late June. At the very least, the next Minister for Defence should be settled in the role some weeks before then. Anything less would indicate a fundamental lack of respect for the position of Defence Minister and for the Defence Forces as a whole."

Irish peacekeeping troops are to receive an increase in allowances despite expected mass public spending cuts. A previously negotiated increase of 5% to their daily allowance of €23.58 a day, looked in doubt because of spending cuts but Defence Minister Willie O'Dea revealed on Thursday that it would be paid.

Defence Forces Recruitment Campaign Launched
A new recruitment campaign has been launched for the Permanent Defence Forces, by Minister for Defence Simon Coveney. The Defence Forces plan to induct just over 600 general service personnel to the Permanent Defence Force in 2016 and a further 850 personnel in 2017.

Tributes Paid To Corporal Gavin Carey Following Recovery Of His Body
The Taoiseach Enda Kenny and the Minister for Defence, Paul Kehoe, have expressed their sympathies on the death of Corporal Gavin Carey. The body of Corporal Carey was recovered from the sea near Tullan Strand, Co Donegal on Saturday, 27 August. The soldier had gotten into difficulty while swimming in the sea off Bundoran last Tuesday, 23 August.
