Concerns Raised Over Aer Lingus Strike Action

Concerns have been raised following the news that the IMPACT trade union has voted in favour of industrial action against Aer Lingus, up to and including strike action.

Fianna Fáil’s spokesperson on Transport & Tourism Timmy Dooley said: "This is a very worrying development and comes ahead of the busy summer season.  It causes uncertainty for existing and potential passengers and could prove detrimental to the tourism industry as a whole.  As an island nation we rely on air travel for inward and outward tourism and any disruption to this service will have a negative impact on the industry and could even see visitors choose another destination with what are perceived to be more secure air links.

"I would urge both sides in this dispute to re-enter negotiations in a bid to resolve this row. This latest threat of industrial action highlights the deep divisions between Aer Lingus management and unions, however, the public should not have to bear the brunt of these disagreements.  This is a matter of vital national importance and it is imperative that a long-term solution is reached to avoid similar action in the future."
