Govt Urged To Make Time For Guerin Report Debate
The government has been urged to make time for a Dáil debate on the Guerin report.
Calling for the debate, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice Pádraig MacLochlainn said that he had written to the Ceann Comhairle on the day the report was published, Friday 09 May, asking for the Dáil debate.
"The Guerin report clearly vindicated Sergeant Maurice McCabe and highlighted huge problems at the heart of An Garda Síochána and the Department of Justice," Deputy MacLochlainn said.
Adding; "The people of Ireland have been understandably shocked by the findings in the report and it is a matter of national importance that should be debated in the Dáil this week.”
Deputy MacLochlainn requested that the Secretary General of the Justice Department, Brian Purcell, appear before the Oireachtas Justice Committee this week to answer questions on the Guerin report.
"It remains to be seen whether the Secretary General will accept the invitation from our Committee but we are hopeful that he will do the right thing and appear before us. As the most senior civil servant in the Justice Department, he needs to answer questions and clear up serious matters raised in the Guerin report. This too is a matter of national importance." the deputy said.
