Cash-In-Transit Robbery Foiled By Off-Duty Garda

An armed cash-in-transit robbery has been stopped by an off-duty garda officer in Ratoath, Co Meath.

According to reports a man armed with what appeared to be a gun approached a security guard collecting as he collected cash at a shopping centre in Ratoath.

The man demanded the cash box before making off in a grey Renault Kangoo van, driven by a second man.

An off-duty garda officer happened to be at the shopping centre at the time of the robbery, and saw the van make its escape.

The officer followed the van into a nearby housing estate where he blocked its path with his car.

Gardai say that the two men dropped the firearm and cashbox and made off on foot across fields.

A search for the men was quickly organised but they have not been caught.

Gardai say that the investigation is ongoing and appealed for anyone with any information to contact Ashbourne Garda Station on 01 8010600.
