Senator Cullinane To Attend Meeting With SIPTU

Sinn Féin Senator David Cullinane will this afternoon attend a meeting between Waterford based Oireachtas members and SIPTU officials to discuss the announcement by Bausch and Lomb to seek 200 redundancies and a 20% pay cut for the remaining 900 staff.

He will also brief the union on his meeting with the Vice President of Bausch and Lomb Angelo Conti and his dialogue with Minister Richard Bruton.

Speaking ahead of the meeting Senator Cullinane said: "I welcome the opportunity to meet with SIPTU and Bausch and Lomb workers this afternoon. I will brief them on my meeting with the company's Vice President and my conversations with Minister Richard Bruton.

"There is a lot of anger and fear at the way the company has embarked on its rationalisation programme. It purposely excluded the workers and their Trade Union from earlier discussions. They have presented the workers with a fait accompli and with the added threat of closure if a deal is not accepted."

"Clearly this is unacceptable and every effort must be made by Government and all Oireachtas members to save jobs and salaries at the Waterford plant."

"I intend to meet with Minister Bruton later this week to discuss these matters and the wider need for high level Government interventions to create and sustain jobs in Waterford. I will call on the Minister to implement the core proposals contained in the South East Economic Development Strategy I published last year."
