Ombudsman Launches Investigation Into Hospital Complaints

An investigation into how public hospitals handle complaints has been launched by the Ombudsman.

As part of the investigation hospital will be visited, HSE files will be examined and the public will be asked to share their experiences.

It is understood the Ombudsman Peter Tyndall, hopes to find out why complaints to the HSE and Ombudsman are "very low" when compared to other jurisdictions.

There are a number of ways for the public to share their experiences with the Ombudsman, including the website www.ombudsman.gov.ie; by email hsecomplaints@ombudsman.gov.ie; by telephone 1890 22 30 30 or by freepost Ombudsman,18 Lower Leeson Street, Freepost F5069, Dublin 2.

Ombudsman Receives 90,000 Complaints In 30 Years
2014 marks 30 years since the establishment of an Ombudsman in Ireland and the Office has received nearly 90,000 complaints against public bodies since 1984. At the launch of his annual report for 2013 Ombudsman Peter Tyndall said that his Office had received 3,190 complaints in 2013.

Complaints To Ombudsman Reach 10-Year High
The office of the Ombudsman has revealed it received a record number of complaints last year. In its latest annual report, the office says it handled more complaints this year than any other year in the last decade. Almost 2,800 complaints against public bodies were received in 2008, an increase of 8% on the figure for 2007.

Woman Dies Following Road Accident
An elderly woman has died following a road traffic incident in Dublin. The victim, who was 75, was struck by a marked garda patrol car shortly before 11.30am on Thursday. The accident happened on the Fonthill Road in Clondalkin. She was taken to Tallaght Hospital, but later died from the injuries she sustained.
