600 SDCC Workers Go On Strike Over Pay Cuts
South Dublin City Council (SDCC) workers are to go on strike today in a row over pay cuts.
The Tallaght and Clondalkin offices have been forced to close after 600 council workers, all members of the IMPACT and LAPO/SIPTU Trade Unions, took strike action.
IMPACT official Peter Nolan said the unilateral pay cuts were a breach of the Haddington Road agreement and said industrial action was being escalated because of management's continued refusal to deal with the situation through proper procedures.
Mr Nolan said: "IMPACT has repeatedly said we're willing to deal with the issue through established procedures. We just want a fair process. Council staff have already experienced substantial pay cuts – averaging 14% – imposed on them in 2009 and 2010. Some of them – those earning over €65,000 a year – experienced a further pay cut in 2013. This is on top of the increased taxes and charges experienced by workers across the economy."
A second strike is set for Thursday 26 June.
In the event of an emergency, customers have been asked to contact the emergency number/out of hours number at 01 457 4907. If customers require information or wish to report an issue with water supply, water quality or waste water, they are asked to contact Irish Water directly on 1890 278 278.
