Votes Counted In Labour Leadership Battle

The votes are being counted in the ballot to elect a new leader of the Labour party.

Polling ended at midday, with the results of the leadership contest expected before 16:00. The deputy leader should be announced by 18:00.

Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton and Minister of State Alex White are contesting the leadership while four candidates are vying for the deputy leadership; Alan Kelly, Ciara Conway, Seán Sherlock and Michael McCarthy.

Senator Now Leader Of Progressive Democrats
Senator Ciaran Cannon has been appointed the new leader of the Progressive Democrats. Mr Cannon narrowly beat fellow Senator Fiona O’Malley, daughter of party founder Des O’Malley, with 51% to 49% of the votes. Mr Cannon, 42, from Co Galway, will replace acting leader Mary Harney, who took over after Michael McDowell lost his Dáil seat last May.

Lenihan's Cancer 'Stabilised'
Minister for Finance Brian Lenihan has said his cancer has stabilised after a course of chemo and radiotherapy. Speaking yesterday about his disease, Mr Lenihan said his condition poses “no clear or immediate danger” to him and that his condition was stable for the present.

Eamon Gilmore looks set to become the new leader of the Irish Labour Party as he remains the only declared candidate for the leadership ahead of Thursday's deadline for nominations. On Monday night, Dublin North East TD Tommy Broughan ruled himself out of the contest.

Speculation Over SDLP Leadership Contest
Senior ranking SDLP members are poised to battle it out for the party leadership, after Mark Durkan announced his intentions to stand down at the weekend. Mr Durkan, who has led the North's nationalist party since 2001, said he would resign as leader and an MLA if reelected to the House of Commons at the next general election.
