Fianna Fáil Propose Bill To Solve Brooks Concerts Problem
Fianna Fáil has published a new Bill that they say would "end the fiasco" of the Garth Brooks concerts at Croke Park.
The Bill seeks to create an appeals process in circumstances where a local authority refuses to grant an event licence.
"This is an almost unprecedented situation and measures need to be taken to resolve it and ensure that it doesn’t happen again. The cancellation of at least two, and now possibly all five of these concerts will have a serious impact on Ireland's reputation abroad," the party's spokesperson on tourism and sport Timmy Dooley said.
He added: "Hotels and restaurants, which had been in line for a major boost are now facing the prospect of mass cancellations and lost revenue. A substantial number of the tickets were bought outside Ireland, guaranteeing inward tourism and increased spending.
"I'm calling on Minsters Hogan and Varadkar to meet urgently and discuss all the options open to them to resolve this matter without delay and I am also publishing legislation today to amend the Planning and Development laws. This Bill provides for an appeals mechanism in cases where local authorities refuse to grant an event licence. Appeals can be made on economic and tourism grounds, or if the refusal to grant the licence could damage Ireland's reputation.
"The current licencing arrangements are clearly no longer fit for purpose and need to be reviewed. I am asking the Government to allow time in the Dáil on Tuesday to debate and pass the Planning and Development (Amendment) Bill so this controversy can be resolved."
