Govt Criticised Over Inaction On Climate Change
The government has been criticised for its failure to introduce a Climate Change Bill, with Sinn Féin saying that they have still not dealt with the issues of flooding and environmental damage.
The party highlighted a commitment made by the government in the Programme for Government to bring in legislation on climate change, however, Senator David Cullinane pointed out that some three years on nothing has been done on the issue.
"Climate continues to be an ongoing issue not just in Ireland but on a global level," the senator said.
Adding: "In Ireland we have seen all too frequently the damaging impact severe flooding that exacts a huge cost from society in terms of human suffering and a monetary cost to local authorities and the state.
"To do nothing is not an option. We need to address the issue of climate change and we need a climate change bill – not heads of bill.
"This is essential for economic growth; for protection of the environment and for global environmental justice."
