DCC Propose Returning Mountjoy To Georgian Past

Dublin City Council has unveiled plans to restore Mountjoy square to its original Georgian design.

The plans would involve relocating a creche, a community centre and a sports ground to other sites and to reinstate the formal gardens and introduce tearooms and a bandstand.

The proposal is estimated to cost around €8.1 million.

Chance Of Super Prison Contracts Recede
The Irish Jesuit Centre has roundly welcomed an urgent review of plans to build a controversial, huge 'super-prison' for Faith and Justice. It has welcomed the announcement by the new Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter, of a review of the proposed super prison at Thornton Hall.

Inmate Dies At Mountjoy Prison
An investigation has been launched after an inmate was found dead in a cell at Mountjoy Prison. It is understood the man, who was in his 30s, was found collapsed in his cell at around 3.30am on Saaturday morning. He was taken to the Mater Hospital, but was pronounced dead a short time later. A post-mortem will be carried out.

Prison Service Confirm Mountjoy Hostage Situation
A prisoner in Mountjoy jail was taken hostage by two brothers in an attempt to secure a transfer prison. The brothers, 24-year-old Stephen and 27-year-old Martin Kelly, tied another prisoner to a chair and held a homemade knife to his throat, according to a report by the Irish Independent.

Investigations Launched Into Mountjoy Riots
Two separate probes have been launched into a serious riot in Mountjoy prison last night, during which four men were hurt. Officers in riot gear were rushed into the prison after a disturbance broke out when over 70 inmates barricaded themselves into an exercise yard for over two hours.

Prison Officers Attacked In Mountjoy
Three prison officers have been injured during an attack in Mountjoy prison on Thursday morning. One of the officers was taken to hospital following the attack in which prisoners on the B wing landing targeted officers at around 9.20am. A group of prisoners tried to take keys from one officer during which a scuffle erupted.
