37 Mobile Phones Recovered In Prison Search

A major search of E wing of the maximum security prison in Portlaoise has uncovered 37 illegally held mobile phones.

E wing in the prison is understood to hold "subversive prisoners", with dissident republicans removed from their cells to facilitate the search.

Reports suggested that some modems had also been recovered during the search, which was carried out by the Operation Support Group, a unit of specially-trained prison officers.

A Prison Service spokesperson said the search has been completed and the discoveries are now a matter for Prison Service authorities and the gardaí.
