Majority Of Children Access Social Media At School

A new survey has found that almost eight in 10 students access social media sites when they are at school.

The BT Young Scientist survey discovered that 79% of pupils had accessed social media at school, with a further 44% accessing it between one and five times during the school day.

More than 1,000 students, between the ages of 13 and 18, took part in the survey. The results found that 26% spend between two and five minutes on social media per visit to a social media site, with a third remaining online for between six and 10 minutes. 38% admitted they spent more than 10 minutes on social media sites per each visit.

When it comes to school work, social media is said to beneficial by many, with 59% of students depending on the platform to help, while 71% said the rise of social media had allowed them to connect with friends who have similar interests.

Mari Cahalane, Head of the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition, is quoted as saying: "Over the past number of years there has been a significant increase in increase in social media related projects at the exhibition.

"Students from across Ireland have submitted projects on a wide range of related topics such as mobile application development, psychometric testing through social media and even ways to determine if you're being lied to on Facebook."

The 2015 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition will take place at the RDS in Dublin, from 7-10 January. The closing date for entries is 1 October 2014. More information can be found here.
