Confidential Report Reveals Concerns Over Portlaoise Hospital

An unpublished Health Service Executive Report called for the closure of the emergency department at Midland Regional Hospital and for surgical services to end, according to a report by the Irish Times.

It is understood that the confidential report was commissioned following a number of baby deaths at the hospitals maternity department, with then national director of acute hospitals, Ian Carter, to look at medical, surgical and emergency services.

The report is dated last March and is understood to have said that the emergency department is not "not clinically sustainable", and warns of a collapse on processes with a risk to patient care.
