Householders Urged To Be Vigilant As Burglaries Increase In Winter

Homeowners have been urged to protect their homes, as gardaí warn that burglaries increase by around 25% during winter.

People have been advised to make sure all doors and windows are secure, to light up their homes using timer switches when they are out, to store keys safely and away from windows and letterboxes, to make a record of valuables and to not keep large amounts of cash at homes and to use their alarm, even while at home.

Gardaí say that there is annually a 25% increase in the number of burglaries during winter, with most occurring between the hours of 17:00 and 23:00.

Official figures show that 29% of burglars gain entry through the front door, 26% through a rear window and 22% through a rear door.
