Labour Accuse Sinn Féin Of 'About Turn' On Water Charges
Sinn Féin has been accused of an "about turn" on water charges, following what Labour call "contradictory statements" from the leadership and local representatives.
Labour Party by-election candidate for Dublin South West, Councillor Pamela Kearns, has said statements from whether or not Sinn Féin would abolish water charges have been contradictory.
"Sinn Fein, from Gerry Adams down, has refused to say that in Government they would abolish water charges. This reflects the position in Northern Ireland where Sinn Fein oversee a €1000 charge on households to cover services such as the provision of water," Councillor Kearns said.
Adding: "Now, however, a matter of weeks before an election in Dublin South West, they have done an about turn, with their candidate, Cathal King, claiming that Sinn Fein would abolish the charges, and Mary Lou McDonald stating that Sinn Fein was committed to reversing water charges in government.
"What is the true Sinn Fein position? Opposing a measure is one thing. Reversing it means something completely different."
