Planning Reforms To Boost Construction Sector
New planning reforms will lead to "a welcome boost for employment" in the Irish construction sector, the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation has said.
Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government Alan Kelly has outlined new proposed legislation that is expected to see 10% of units in new housing schemes set aside for social housing.
Minister for Business and Employment Gerald Nash said the reforms would boost employment in the sector.
Other measures included in the legislation will see levies imposed on sites that are left vacant and a 'use it or lose it' clause aimed at encouraging developers to begin work on sites that have been zoned for development.
"These measures introduced by my colleague Minister Alan Kelly today will encourage developers to begin work much more quickly on sites which have been zoned for development. This will result in more much needed jobs in the construction sector," said Minister Nash.
"I am also very pleased to see that developers will have to provide up to 10% of their housing units for social housing, and will no longer be able to 'buy' their way out of commitments to social housing provision.
"Since I have become Minister for Business and Employment, an issue that is repeatedly raised with me by employers and workers is the cost of housing and how this is impacting on low and middle income workers.
"Unfortunately, owning a home is out of reach for many low and middle income earners. I believe the measures outlined today will assist in increasing the housing supply particularly to low income families and also may go some way to addressing the housing rent increases that we have seen in many places, particularly our cities."
