Domestic Holidays Grow 6.7%

The number of people taking holidays at home in Ireland grew by 6.7% over the first half of 2014, compared to the same period in 2013.

Figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show the number of overall domestic trips increased by 6.6%.

Domestic holiday nights increased by 5.2%, while the average length of stay for domestic holidays remained unchanged at 2.6 days.

Expenditure on domestic holidays increased by 4.4% from January to June this year.

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring:"Thankfully 2014 is proving to be another excellent year for Irish tourism. We were already aware from previous CSO releases that our overseas visit numbers were up by 9.4% for the first eight months of 2014 compared to the corresponding period of 2013. Today’s figures show that more Irish people are also enjoying our wonderful tourism offering. Not only have Irish people taken more holiday trips at home, but expenditure on domestic holidays has also increased by 4.4% in the first six months of 2014 which is a great boost for the tourism industry.

"2013 was a landmark year for Irish tourism, it being the year of The Gathering. It was always going to be a challenge to maintain the positive momentum in 2014 but today’s figures are a further indication that we have succeeded in this regard. The Government has prioritised tourism and clearly that decision is paying dividends. Measures like the retention of the 9% VAT rate and continued support for the development of new tourism attractions are all helping to create new jobs and stimulate the economy," Minister Ring said.
