1 In 3 Elderly People 'Are Lonely'
One in three people, over the age of 65 and who live in their own homes, are said to have experienced feelings of loneliness, a new study has found.
The survey, conducted by St James's Hospital and supported by Age Friendly, also revealed that such feelings of loneliness can also have an impact on physical wellbeing.
Age Friendly has said more still needs to be done to address the issue.
Hugh O'Connor, CEO of Age Friendly Ireland, is quoted by RTÉ as saying: "Loneliness is a far too common aspect of life for older people in Ireland.
"More than one in three community-dwelling people over 65 report being lonely – and this is not just about emotional well being.
"Loneliness has very real impacts on physical well being and has been shown to increase rates of depression, hypertension and even death."
