Luas Pedestrian Safety Campaign Launched

The Railway Procurement Agency and the Department of Transport have launched a campaign to highlight the dangers of walking out in front of Luas trams.

The campaign uses CCTV footage captured from the cabs of Luas trams and shows people almost stepping in front of the trams while distracted by their phones, listening to music on headphones or simply not being able to see because of a hooded top.

The campaign asks: "Is being in a hurry or distracted really worth your life?"

The Luas operator has said that in 2014 so far, there have been 71 near misses with pedestrians, with "most, if not all" incidents caused by people being distracted by their phones.
