HSE Issue Warning After Mumps Cases Increase

The Health Service Executive (HSE) has reported the number of confirmed cases of mumps has doubled, compared to the same time last year.

To date, more than 400 people have been diagnosed with the contagious airborne disease; this is compared to 183 cases for all of 2013.

It is understood that the majority of cases this year have affected teenagers and young adults.

The HSE has issued alerts to colleges and universities and urged students to be vaccinated.

HSE Issue Meningitis Advice After Co Cavan Cases Confirmed
Parents have been warned to remain vigilant for the signs of meningitis following the diagnosis of two children in Co Cavan with the potentially fatal infection. The two children attended the same crèche in Ballyheelan, Kilnaleck. Antibiotics have been administered to all children at the crèche and any staff that had contact with the children.

No Confirmed Or Suspected Cases Of Ebola In Ireland - HSE
There are no confirmed or suspected cases of ebola in Ireland, the Health Service Executive has said. In a statement on their website, the HSE said: "The National Isolation Unit in the Mater Hospital is used for patients with a variety of infectious diseases.

Warning Issued Over Ongoing Measles Outbreak
The HSE has issued a warning over an ongoing measles outbreak in different parts of Ireland. Outbreak control teams have been convened in HSE East, South and Midwest. A total of 19 measles cases linked to the outbreak have been identified of which 13 are confirmed and six are probable.

HSE Concerned Over Increasing Number Of Gonorrhoea Infections
The levels of gonorrhoea infections increased by 33% between 2011 and 2012, the HSE has revealed. According to the Health Service Executive, there were 817 recorded cases of infection in the Dublin, Wicklow and Kildare regions in 2012, up from 613 in 2011. To date, in 2013, that figure has continued to climb, with 1,077 cases recorded so far.

C Diff Hits Drogheda Hospital
Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda has been hit by an outbreak of the C Diff bacteria, leading to a number of services being suspended. The outbreak of Clostridium Difficile (C Diff) has meant a number of hospital beds have been closed as a clean-up team tackles the bacteria.
