RTÉ Choose Not To Advertise E-Cigarettes
Broadcaster RTÉ has decided that it will not air adverts for e-cigarettes, saying that it will wait for the development of specific advertising codes.
The broadcaster says that because e-cigarettes are not classified as a tobacco product or as a cure, they are currently not covered by the advertising codes.
While e-cigarette advertising has already appeared on TV3, RTÉ have said that "broadcasting codes normally refer to tobacco products or smoking cures. The advertising of tobacco products is prohibited on a European-wide basis for television and on-demand services.
"Irish broadcast codes prohibit the advertising on both radio and television of tobacco products and apply restrictions on the advertising of smoking cures."
It is understood that a new Europe-wide code is in development.
