TUI Warn Of 'Days Of Strike' In Ongoing Reform Dispute

The Teachers' Union of Ireland (TUI) has warned new strike action could be taken before the end of November.

The union's president, Gerry Quinn, told RTÉ's Morning Ireland there could be "days of strike" if the Minister for Education, Jan O'Sullivan, did not intervene "in a meaningful way" in the ongoing dispute over junior cycle reform.

Mr Quinn made his comments after the latest round of talks between the TUI and the Department of Education finished on Tuesday.

The dispute surrounds a proposal that up to 40% of a student's grade be decided by continuous assessment however, teachers have expressed they are unhappy about having to assess their own pupils.

Speaking on the same programme, the minister for education said the threats of strike action were "disproportionate".
