HIQA Report Critical Of Cavan Hospital Hand Hygiene
A report from the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has found an increase in Clostridium difficile at Cavan General Hospital.
The report follows an unannounced inspection which was carried out on 9th October. Two surgical wards were inspected by HIQA during the visit.
Inspectors said they found "major problems with hand hygiene" at the hospital.
The report describes the problem as an "immediate high risk" to the health and welfare of patients, staff and visitors.
In response to the report the hospital said that while incidents of the infection were up, this was due to "persistent incidence of isolated unrelated cases" rather than one major outbreak.
HIQA said "a failure of good hand hygiene practice cannot be out ruled as a contributory factor".
