Cocaine Seized From Cargo Vessel

Cocaine with an estimated street value of £40m (€51m) has been seized following a joint operation by the National Crime Agency (NCA), Border Force and An Garda Síochána.

The drugs were found during a search of cargo vessel Star Stratos at Portsmouth port earlier this week (1 December).

Around 300kg were discovered concealed within a shipment of bananas which had originated in Colombia.

Gardaí have said they believe part of the consignment of drugs was destined for the area, and the seizure is a "major disruption" to elements of an Irish organised crime gang.

Investigations are continuing in the UK and Ireland.

It is the second join operation between An Garda Síochána and the NCA which has resulted in a significant seizure of cocaine within the last three months. In September, around a tonne of cocaine was seized by the Irish Naval Service from the yacht Makayabella around 300 miles off the south west coast of Ireland.
