'Amber' Warning As Ireland Braces For Stormy Weather
Met Éireann has announced an 'amber' weather warning for today, as Ireland prepares for strong gale force winds and heavy showers of rain or hail.
Westerly and strong gales will hit all Irish coastal waters and the Irish Sea. Winds will occasionally reach storm force 10 from Erris Head to Malin Head to Fair Head.
Across the country it will be very windy with strong to gale force westerly winds and severe gusts in the west and north. There will also be scattered heavy showers of rain or hail and there is a risk of sleet or snow on higher ground. Some thundery downpours are likely in the north and northwest. It will be cold with top temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees.
It will remain windy tonight with strong to gale force westerly winds and further scattered heavy showers of rain, hail or sleet. There will be some snow on higher ground. Lowest temperatures will be between 1 and 4 degrees.
Thursday morning will remain very windy with strong and gusty westerly winds; however these will ease in the afternoon. There will be further scattered heavy showers at first, but rain will push into southwest later and may turn to sleet or snow in the north.
Heavy rain will move into the southwest of the country early on Thursday night and will spread eastwards overnight. Colder conditions will move into the northern half of the country and the rain will become wintry in parts of Ulster and Connacht. Temperatures will fall to between -3 and 0 degrees in the evening.
It will remain very cold on Friday with temperatures struggling to reach values between 3 and 6. Friday is also due to be a blustery day with wintry showers, mainly in parts of the north and northwest.
Friday night will see widespread sub-zero temperatures and frost and icy patches.
