Garda Officers Seriously Injured In East Cork Rampage

Two garda officers are being treated for serious injuries after a number of altercations with a group of men in east Cork on Monday.

It is understood the incident began shortly after midnight when a car failed to stop for gardaí on the outskirts of Killeagh.

Garda said that officers gave chase but when the car was stopped a number of men attacked the two officers, with one officer being hit with a rock and suffering serious injuries to his eye and head. The second officer suffered injuries to his jaw.

The group of men then made off in the direction of Youghal where they rammed another garda patrol car before heading in the direction of Dungourney.

In Dungourney, garda officers saw a group of men trying to gain access to a house and a standoff ensued. It is understood that during the standoff garda were threatened with knives, sticks and other weapons.

Eventually garda arrested four men, aged 18, 22, 25 and 47, as well as a 27-year-old woman and seized a car, weapons and cash.

The five people are due to appear before mallow District Court.

The garda officers injuries are said to be serious but not life-threatening.

Two Arrested After Shots Fired At Garda
Two men have been arrested after shots were fired at garda officers in Clonmoyle, Rathangan. At approximately 1am on Friday morning, garda attempted to stop a vehicle. Shots were fired at officers and the car sped off. Following a pursuit, garda stopped the car and arrested the two men in the vehicle and recovered a weapon.
