Same Sex Marriage Referendum Due Next May
A referendum on same-sex marriage will be held in May 2015, the Cabinet has revealed.
The marriage referendum will be one of a number of referendums held next May, with the first week of May being speculated as a possible timeframe.
Welcoming the news, Tánaiste Joan Burton said: "The fact that this referendum is now to take place is a mark of the progress that has taken place in this country in recent years and decades, and indicates the extent to which attitudes to lesbian and gay people have changed."

Ombudsman's Concern At Limited Children's Referendum
The Ombudsman for Children has said she is opposed to holding a limited referendum dealing only with child protection, which may run on the same day as the Lisbon Treaty referendum. Marriage Referendum Results Welcomed
Sinn Féin said the result of the marriage referendum represents the lifting of discrimination against the gay community in the rest of the island of Ireland. Daithí McKay MLA is also calling for the same rights to be extended to Northern Ireland.

Over 400 same sex marriages have taken place in Ireland since the passing of the Marriage Equality Referendum on 23 May 2015. The largest number of marriages have taken place in Dublin, with 213 couples getting married in the last year.

A new poll has revealed that up to 80% of people support same-sex marriage, Labour Party TD and Co-Chair of Labour LGBT, John Lyons, has said. Highlighting the Red C/Paddy Power poll, Mr Lyons said: "(The) poll builds upon consecutive national polls which show consistent support to afford gay and lesbian couples the right to civil marriage.
