Ireland To Defer City Of Culture Award

Ireland will defer its next City of Culture until after 2020, with Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys, citing the high level of funding required.

It is understood that a number of Irish cities are also planning to bid for European Capitol of Culture, with Dublin, Limerick, Galway and a southeast group all expressing an interest.

The news comes as Galway ends its inaugural City of Culture year, which the minister said has been a major success.

However, with the European Capitol of Culture to be announced for 2020, Ireland will defer it's own City of Culture until after.
