Taoiseach Unveils First New Garda Cars

The Taoiseach has officially unveiled that first batch of a new fleet of Garda patrol cars.

The 370 new cars were presented by Enda Kenny at Garda headquarters in Phoenix Park.

The new fleet is part of a €10m package that was announced on Budget Day.

To date, the money has been used to buy 265 liveried cars – 85 Hyundai i30 estates, 160 Hyundai i40 estates and 20 Opel Insignia Sports Tourer-Traffic – and 80 unmarked cars, including 30 Ford Focus saloons and 50 Hyundai i40 saloons, plus 25 unmarked vans.

Speaking at the event, the Taoiseach said: "The provision of these new vehicles is being accompanied by the recent recruitment of new Gardai, marking the Government's commitment to enhancing the police presence in communities and supporting An Garda Siochana in tackling and preventing crime."

New Cars Sales 'Brake By A Third'
Government statistics have revealed that the number of new cars licensed in November fell by 34.9% when compared to last year. The Central Statistics Office said there were 1,398 new private cars licensed in November 2011, compared with 2,146 in November 2010.

Decrease of 14.6% In New Private Cars Licensed
There were 10,581 new private cars licensed in March 2012, compared with 12,390 in March 2011, a decrease of 14.6%. The number of new goods vehicles licensed in March 2012 was 1,155 compared with 1,179 in the corresponding month last year - a decrease of 2.0%.

Car Sales Figures Down 40% On 2007
The number of new cars sold in Ireland last month has taken a worrying dip since the same month last year. Figures from the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) show a 40% drop compared to August 2007 with over 5,200 new cars sold last month, compared to almost 9,000 in August of last year.

Search Resumes For Men Who Fled Crash Scene
Two men who fled the scene of a road traffic accident in Milltown, Co Galway last night, are still being sought by Gardaí. Two other men, who were unable to free themselves from the back of the car following the collision, are being treated at Galway University Hospital for minor injuries.

Garda To Take On 250 New Recruits
Garda is to take on 250 new recruits. Speaking ahead of her address to the Annual Conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI), Frances Fitzgerald TD, Minister for Justice and Equality has confirmed the recruits will enter Garda College in 2015.
