Irish Nationals To Be Deported From Australia Over Roofing Scam
Twenty four Irish nationals are to be deported from Australia over an alleged roofing repair scam.
A post on a Western Australia Police Facebook page confirmed that five men and two juveniles had been arrested in connection with a large-scale roofing scam. It is understood the suspects had been posing as employees of a legitimate roof repair business and targeting elderly residents in the suburbs of Perth.
Police said that prior to the arrests, they had received 39 complaints related to the scam in January alone.
Following the arrests, Australian police searched caravans at the Banksia Tourist Park where they detained a further 19 Irish nationals, understood to be women and children, and seized a large sum of cash.
Police reported that all of the detainees have been remanded in custody by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, all their visas have been cancelled and they are awaiting deportation.
