Permission Granted For Specialist Hospice In Wicklow

Wicklow County Council has granted planning permission for a new 15-bed hospice at Magheramore.

The Wicklow Hospice Trust has secured €3m in funding for cthe onstruction of the specialist unit but it is understood it is still waiting on a decision by the Health Service Executive over funding for day-to-day operations.

The land where the unit is to be developed, which overlooks the sea near Brittas Bay, has been donated by the Columban Sisters.

Daniel Day-Lewis Welcomes Wicklow Hospice Progress
Irish actor Daniel Day Lewis has welcomed news that the Wicklow Hospice Foundation can proceed with a new 12-bed facility at its Magheramore site. The Foundation has almost reached its fundraising target of €3m, 50% of the total cost, which would enable the HSE to get on board and fund the development.

A major report, launched today by the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF), has  estimated that 2,500 patients each year are denied access to the hospice inpatient care they need because of the failure to develop hospice services countrywide.

Gardaí in Wicklow believe that an Asian gang is behind a massive drug-making operation, which they smashed last week. Last Thursday night, a €500,000 cannabis factory was discovered in a rural farmhouse, at the Cullenmore bends, outside the village of Ashford, Co Wicklow.

Wicklow Port First To Be Transferred Under Govt Agreement
Wicklow County Council has taken control of Wicklow Port after the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, signed an official transfer order. The order was signed with the consent of Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Paschal Donohoe, and Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Simon Coveney.
