Garda Investigate Fire At Fine Gael Constituency Office

Gardaí have arrested a 39-year-old man in connection with a suspected arson attack on the constituency office of Fine Gael TD Michelle Mulherin.

It is understood a flammable liquid was thrown through a ground floor window of the office in Ballina, Co Mayo, at about 19:00 on Tuesday. Garda said the office was badly smoke damaged by a small fire but that no one was injured in the incident as the office was unoccupied at the time.

A man was arrested in connection with the fire a short time later and has since been released without charge.

A forensic examination of the scene is being carried out today.

Mountjoy Prison Cell Fire
A fire broke out in a cell at Dublin's Mountjoy Prison on Thursday night, according to reports. It is understood that a prisoner had set fire to a cell. However, it is believed that prison staff and fire crews were able to contain the fire quickly. No-one was injured in the incident.
