President Higgins To Become Gender Equality 'Champion'
President Michael D Higgins is to become a United Nations "champion" for its HeForShe campaign for gender equality.
Speaking at a conference in Dublin Castle, President Higgins, announced that he was to become one of ten global champions, promoting women's rights and empowerment.
The President was attending the National Women's Council and the Irish Human Rights and Equality Authority conference reviewing the Beijing Platform for action.

Early indications have revealed that Labour’s Michael D Higgins is likely to be appointed as Ireland’s ninth president. The so-called "maverick" is now expected to have a commanding lead over Independent Seán Gallagher when a first count result is declared later this evening.

Election 2016 To Take Place On 26 February
Taoiseach Enda Kenny has confirmed the election will take place on 26 February. Writing on Twitter, he said: "I am seeking a dissolution of Dáil Éireann today with the election to be held on February 26th." Mr Kenny and President Higgins signed the papers just after 10.30am on Wednesday. Polling stations will open 23 days from today, 03 February.
